The 4th National Wildlife Law Enforcement Summit, held in Malay, Aklan, convened 117 participants to revisit the Wildlife Law Enforcement Action Plan (WILDLEAP) last March 18-23, 2023. Participants of the summit were representatives of different Law Enforcement Agencies from DENR Regional Offices, Bureau of Customs, PNP Maritime Group, Philippine Coast Guard, Department of Justice, National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine Ports Authority, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and from different civic society organizations.

This summit aimed to provide a venue for information exchange on lessons learned, good practices, innovations, success stories and challenges in wildlife law enforcement operation in regions of the country; document valuable information in wildlife law enforcement in aid of enhancing enforcement strategies and guidelines in the country; review and update the Wildlife Law Enforcement Action Plan (WildLEAP); and, re-affirm the commitment and support of government and non-government partners in the combating IWT.

The undersecretary for legal administration and supervising undersecretary of BMB, Atty. Ernesto D. Adobo, Jr. graced the opening ceremony and invited summit participants to “renew our commitment to safeguard our nation's vulnerable wildlife”. There was a presentation on the Wildlife Law Enforcement efforts and initiatives in terrestrial species, marine and aquatic species, wildlife species in the province of Palawan, and wildlife trafficking at the regional level and links with the Philippines. These efforts are directed towards capacity building and development, strengthening and sustaining collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, and harmonization of policies related to wildlife law enforcement.



In the workshop and plenary, the Wildlife Law Enforcement Action Plan was revisited and enhanced. The summit participants strengthened their commitment by signing in the Summit Resolution to Support the implementation of WILDLEAP. Tanggol Kalikasan served as process documenter, workshop facilitators and documentors during the 4th NWLE pursuant to the Component of the Environmental Justice Sector Reform in the Philippines Phase 3 (EJSRP 3), “Facilitate and support to wildlife law enforcement summit” through preparation, planning and facilitation of technical support.
